STEIN — Tipped off to Vandal Savage’s (guest star Casper Crump) whereabouts, the team infiltrates a munitions deal with Professor Stein (Victor Garber) as their leader. Surrounded by some of the toughest criminals in the world, things quickly go from bad to worse when Savage realizes they don’t belong there. A massive fight ensues and a piece of the Atom’s (Brandon Routh) suit falls off and into the wrong hands, which could potentially cause disastrous consequences in the future. Stein realizes the best way to retrieve the missing piece is to contact a brilliant man – his younger self. He, Sara (Caity Lotz) and Jax (Franz Drameh) head off in search of young Martin Stein (guest star Graeme McComb), much to Rip’s (Arthur Darvill) consternation. Meanwhile, Snart (Wentworth Miller) and Rory (Dominic Purcell) plan to steal a key element in defeating Savage but still unsure of his new teammates, Ray (Brandon Routh) demands to come along on the mission. Carter (guest star Falk Hentschel) helps Kendra (Ciara Renée) remember something vital. One thought about your “Which time periods else might they go to?” conversation. I do hope that Jonah Hex isn’t the only case in which they draw on DC’s library of historical characters, because there’s a lot of opportunity there: I can’t imagine that WB’s film division is going to veto them using the Golden Gladiator or Viking Prince.
Which brings me to my favorite possibility. They’d never do it, and probably shouldn’t – but I’d really love it if our heroes met versions of DC’s Arthurian characters (Morgaine, Jason Blood, the Shining Knight, Madame Xanadu, and probably others I don’t know about). But instead of the technicolor “Yonder is the castle of my father, the king” Adventures of Robin Hood cod-medieval depiction, have them do versions of these characters in a “realistic” 6th-century post-Roman Britain with a “historical” Arthur leading a band of Romano-Britons against the Saxons. (But still with magic.) I’m a skeptic about all that as history, but it’s produced some great historical fantasy. For bonus in-joke, Arthur happens to look exactly like Rip Hunter, so Arthur Darvill can play him.
